قبل ما قارب العقدين طرح "روجيه غارودي" المتنقل بين اتجاهات عصر الأيديولوجيات مشروعه "حوار الحضارات داعيا إلى تأسيس أرضية لتفاهم بين شعوب الأرض، وكان مشروعه يتسم بسمة أساسية هي نقد الهيمنة الغربية على عالم اليوم، واعتبر الغرب عرضا ألم بمسيرة البشرية وبشر بزواله. أما مفكرو الغرب في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين، فقد كانوا يعبرون عن اتجاهات الغرب البرجماتية ومن هذا القبيل نظرية "نهاية التاريخ والإنسان الأخير" التي أطلقها "فو كوياما" الياباني الأصل الأمريكي الجنسية قبيل أعوام. وفي صيف "1993" نشر المفكر الأمريكي الشهير "صموئيل هنتغتون" مقالا في صحيفة "foreign affairs" تحت عنوان "صدام الحضارات" محاولا قراءة مستقبل العالم المعاصر وتأكيد تحول مسارات الصراع في القرن القادم إلى صراع بين تلك الحضارات وليس صراعا أيديولوجيا أو اقتصاديا .... ومع تمايز الحضارات التي يحددها بسبع أو ثماني حضارات في أمور عدة، فانة يأخذ بالبعد الديني كأكثر ما يميزها ويجعلها تتباين عن بعضها البعض، ظلت هذه الدراسة التي وصفها هنتغتون بعنوان "الصدام بين الحضارات" محل بحث ومناقشة منذ سنوات عديدة في الغرب والشرق على حد سواء وعندما كادت تلك المقولة تختفي وتتلاشي، عادت هجمات 11 سبتمبر لتحييها من جديد.
