|a This study is conducted to introduce the concept of the Death of the Author developed by the French theorist Roland Barthes, and to propose a model applied to Hardy’s Jude the Obscure according to the Barthian Reading of a text. In addition to that, we aim to determine to what extent a reader can grasp the meaning without referring constantly to the author’s biography having the “text” as a basis. Yet, this paper will discuss Barthes’ approach to analyse a literary text, which is considered as a reading technique employed to deduce specific meanings lying beneath the deep structure of the anonymous sentences in a piece of writing, disregarding the authorial background. Therefore, the reader’s intention becomes the focus of our investigation. Accordingly, we are required to yield to the five codes and the lexical analysis proposed by Barthes in S/Z in order to exclude the constant reference to the Author, and to enhance it with the Reader-Response Theory. Thus, to encourage the readers to stimulate their own understanding and trust their intentions.
