إن المفهوم والحياة لهما العمر نفسه تقريبا، ذلك أن كلاهما أسس للبحث فيهما أرسطو، من خلال وضعه للمنطق من أجل ضبط المفهوم في كتابه "التحليلات"، كما ضبط مبادئ علم البيولوجيا الذي يبحث في الحياة من خلال كتابه "الحيوان"، لكن هذا التقارب لم يدم طويلا نظرا لارتباط المفهوم بالفلسفة أما الحياة فارتبطت بالبيولوجيا، والذي أعاد إحياء هذه العلاقة هو الفيلسوف الفرنسي جورج كانغيلام (G. Canguilhem)، من خلال مشروعه الإبستيمولوجي الذي زاوجه مع تاريخ العلوم، هذا الفرع الجديد كان مجال اشتغاله الحفر في نشأة المفاهيم، قصد تمييزها عن باقي المفاهيم المتداخلة معها، بهذا نبني هرم انتسابي لتشكل المفهوم، قاعدة هذا الهرم نظريات تنبش في تشكله، ورأسه مصطلح يضم له حيوزات تنضوي تحتها ما صدق عنه هذا الوصف. وفي علوم الحياة التي شكلت فضاء دراسة المفهوم في هذه الإبستيمولوجيا، أوكل كانغيلام مهمة صيانة المفهوم إلى مؤرخ العلوم، الذي يطعم عمله بالنقد الإبستيمولوجي، خاصة أمام حركة النقل الممارسة على المفاهيم من مجال إلى أخر، والتي قد تبدو عنيفة عندما ينقل المفهوم من مجال استعماله الأصلي إلى مجال آخر بعيد عنه على سبيل الإعارة، أين تمر المفاهيم في هذه الحالة من صورتها النوعية الوصفية لتصبح مفاهيم في حقل آخر تحمل دلالات كمية، وتصبح قابلة لتصنيف الحالات العادية وغير العادية وفق نموذج يخالف طبيعة الحياة، كما تسمح هذه العملية بتسلل الكثير من المفاهيم متداخلة الوظيفية، فليست كل المفاهيم تبذل نفس الجهد لإيصال المعني، فهناك مفاهيم أصلية ومفاهيم طفيلية، ولهذا عمد كانغيلام من خلال مشروعه على تنقية مفاهيم علوم الحياة من تدخل تلك المفاهيم الغريبة عنها.
