استهدفت الدراسة التعرف على النتاج الفكري المنشور في مجلة البصرة الجراحية للمدة (2004-2011) من حيث حجم ومؤلفو وموضوعات هذا النتاج وقد أتبع المنهج الكمي لإنجاز هذه الدراسة وقد خرجت الدراسة بعدة نتائج أهمها: بلغ عدد الأعمال (313) عملا منها (209)، بحوث ودراسات و (6) تقارير، و (43) مقالا و (18) كلمة عدد، و (22) عروض و (15) سير. وقد أسهم في كتابة النتاج المنشور فيها (269) مؤلفا، وقد تم توزيع الأعمال على (148) رأس موضوع، وقد حظي كل من رأس موضوع (العظام-إمراض) و (المرارة-جراحة) بأعلى نسبة من الإعمال (3.87%) وأوصت الدراسة بعدة توصيات أهمها: دعوة عمادة كلية الطب ورئاسة قسم الجراحة للاستفادة من هذه الدراسة في رسم السياسة العلمية لهما، وإعداد كشاف موضوعي هجائي للمجلة يصدر سنويا، وكشاف تراكمي يصدر كل ثلاث أو خمس سنوات ويفضل أن يصدر هذا الكشاف بشكل مطبوع وإلكتروني ويتاح استعماله على موقع الجامعة على شبكة الأنترنت
