|d Cet article se propose d’étudier comment les thématiques de l’écrivain trinidadien Earl Lovelace témoignent d’une préoccupation claire quant à la formulation d’une vision masculiniste de la nation, fondée sur la “vision de l’homme de lui-même, la recherche de son intégrité”. Le trope de quête de l’individualité masculine est concentré dans le catalyseur qu’est l’image du guerrier. Cette image doit être perçue comme métonymique, et même allégorique, du processus national d’une prise de conscience identitaire plus authentique. D’où l’amalgame entre les préoccupations nationales et masculinistes, un trait qui caractérise le canon masculin nationaliste caribéen et laisse les femmes sans niche viable à se tailler dans l’édifice national.

|b This article proposes to investigate how Trinidadian writer Earl Lovelace’s thematic strands evince a clear concern with formulating a masculinist vision of the nation predicated upon a “man’s view of himself, the search as it were for his integrity”. The trope of quest for male selfhood is concentrated within the catalyst-image of the warrior. This image is to be perceived as metonymic, and even allegorical, of the national process of coming alive to a truer sense of self. Hence, the conflation between national and male-inflected concerns, a feature that characterizes the Caribbean nationalist male canon and leaves women with no viable niche to carve out for themselves within the national edifice.
