تتجلى أهمية هذا الموضوع في أنه، على الرغم من كثرة ما كتب عن الأدب العربـي ونقـده؛ فإنه ما ازل محتفظاً بخصبه، وغناه، وجدته، وحاجته إلـى مزيـد مـن الدراسة والتحليـل؛ بالـذات فـي هذا الزمان الذي كثرت فيه الآراء والمدارس النقدية ولا سبيل لمواجهة التحـدي إلا بمراجعـة الآراء النقدية القديمة، وإمدادها وتقويتها بكل جديد مفيد، فكانت تلك الوقفة مع آراء ابن قتيبة النقدية من خلال بعض مؤلفاته. هذا البحث الذي خصصناه لآراء ابـن قتيبـة النقديـة، نأمـل أن يعـالج قضـية مـن قضـايا الأدب العربي، إذ أن الوقوف عند هذه الآراء؛ يجعلنا أكثر إلماما بقضايا النقد الحديث. طبيعة هذا البحث تقتضي استخدام المنهج التأريخي لتحديـد ملامح الشخصية وتتبع حياته وتوثيق آثاره العلمية، ثم المنهج الوصفي التحليلي، لرصد المادة النقدية وتوظيفها وعرضها وتحليلها ومن ثم استنباط النتائج منها. من أهم نتائج هذا البحث كان الوقوف عند طيب خلقه جعل نقده متزنا. الوقوف عند جيد الشعر ورديئه وخاطئه وأقسامه وطبقاته والتي لفت إليها ابن قتيبة. الاستفادة من منهجه النقدي، إذ كان متخير اللفظ ولطيف المعنى، وموقفه من قضية اللفظ والمعنى.
The Importance of this topic is quite visible, that in spite of the many writings about the Arabic literature and its criticism, it is virgin and needs further study and analysis, especially at this era, in which there were many views and schools of criticism and no way to face the challenge only by reviewing the old critical views, after supplying and strengthen them with all that new and useful. Here appears the importance of the research in the critical views of Ibn Qutayba through some of his writings. We have devoted this research to the critical views of Ibn Qutayba, seeking to heal one of the issues of the Arabic world literature, for having knowledge of these views; wins us a comprehensive information about the critical issues of modern criticism. Indeed such a study necessitates adopting the historical methodology for limiting the features of the character, tracing her life and documenting her scientific production, in addition to the descriptive analytical method to register the critical topic to benefit from it and demonstrate and analyze to derive the results. From the important results of the study: Having known his decency, made his criticism balanced, we have known the good, bad, wrong, sections and the layers of his poetry that he mentioned. Utilization of his critical method, as he used to select his word and the gentle meaning, and his point of view in the word and meaning issue.
