In this thesis we intend to discuss about normal forms for the orientable and non-orientable surfaces. For the sake of this we have chosen two standard references: “A. Kawauchi, T. Shibuya and S. Suzuki, Descriptions on surfaces in four-space I, Normal forms, Math. Sem. Notes Kobe Univ. 10 (1982), 75-125” and “Seiichi Kamada, Non-orientable surfaces in 4-space, Osaka J. Math. 26 (1989), 367-385”. The aim is to review the important ideas of these two papers. Essentially, the work done by Kawauchi, Shibuya and Suzuki relates to defining the normal forms for the orientable surfaces whereas the work of Kamada relates to the non-orientable surfaces. The method of normal form enables us to visualize the surfaces embedded in four-dimensional space and thus it will help us to investigate these surfaces. We also study properties and applications of normal forms for both orientable and non-orientable surfaces. |
