المستخلص: Translation of proverbs from one language and culture to another is one of the most difficult tasks which a translator must find solutions for due to the specificity of linguistic and cultural proverbs. They are concise, eloquent phrases rooted in a particular cultural environment, and the translator’s trouble is compounded when the two languages/cultures, of the origin and target, are different.
The aim of this study is to try to shed light upon some of the strategies used by translators in transferring proverbs from one language/culture to another. To this end, the study is based on the novel of Algerian writer Ahlam Mostaghanmi “Memory of the Body” (1993) and the French translation (2001).
The study concluded that the translator did not replace the proverbs in the novel with the equivalent in the target language contrary to what was expected. Instead, he tried hard to preserve the Arabic and Algerian proverbs using a strategy of literal translation with a measure of freedom.
