Abstract: تبحث هذه الدراسة في التنافس البريطاني – العثماني على البحرين خلال النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر، في ضوء المصالح الاستراتيجية لكل منهما، وأثر هذا التنافس في العلاقات بين الطرفين، الذي تمثل في القنوات الدبلوماسية والاحتجاج السياسي، وفي بعض الأحيان اللجوء إلى بعض الإجراءات العسكرية؛ نظرا إلى ما تمثله جزر البحرين من أهمية اقتصادية وتجارية واستراتيجية في منطقة الخليج العربي. وقد تتبعت الدراسة أهم محطات هذا التنافس بين البريطانيين والعثمانيين، لا سيما أنه جاء في وقت كانت فيه بريطانيا قد قامت بسلسلة من الإجراءات تمثلت في ممارسة الضغوط على القوى المحلية، خاصة شيوخ البحرين؛ حيث ألزمتهم بعقد عدد من المعاهدات والاتفاقيات، كما بينت الدراسة سياسة الدولة العثمانية المنافسة للسياسة البريطانية في البحرين.

This study addresses the British – Ottoman competition over Bahrain during the second half of the nineteenth century in light of the strategic interests for each of them. It also tries to investigate the effect of such competition on the relations between both parties, represented in the diplomatic channels and political protest, and sometimes through some military actions, in order to enhance their influence, due to the economic, commercial and strategic importance of the Bahrain islands in the Gulf region. The study tracked the most important stations of this competition between the British and the Ottomans, especially since this competition came at a time when Britain had carried out a series of actions represented in putting pressure on local forces especially sheikhs of Bahrain, where it obliged them to hold a number of treaties and agreements. The study also discusses the Ottoman competition policy of the British policy in Bahrain, and attempts of the competing forces to exploit the internal power struggle between the members of the ruling family in Bahrain.
