According to latest available official data in the third quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate of the Jordanian society amounted to 18.6%. The present report analyzes the phenomenon, taking into consideration the direct and indirect impacts for such high indicators on economic growth. The term Alternative Opportunity is employed to indicate the economic potentials missing from the society as a result of the rising unemployment rates. It is concluded that Jordan’s long-term unemployment statistics are high, structural, systematic and masked. They also negatively affect economic growth by reducing labour productivity and chances to found new enterprises in a relatively small economy, loss of the labour force potentials inactive in the fields of innovation, building of capacity and knowledge necessary to motivate and sustain development, bearing in mind that the Jordanian labour force is young and educated.
