Dysmenorrheal Awareness among Female Adolescent Students in South of Jordan: A Cross Sectional Study

المستخلص: Introduction: Dysmenorrhea is difficult menstruation flow or pain. It is associated with other symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, and back pain. Aim: to assess the dysmenorrheal awareness among adolescent females in the south of Jordan. Method: A cross sectional descriptive study among 437 adolescent females in the south of Jordan; a questionnaire was used regarding menstruation perceptions, daily life activities and management patterns. Results: 437 students completed the questionnaire (95%) response rate. menarche age is (m=12.6); menstrual cycle characteristics are regular (50.3%), bleeding heaviness (1-4 days) and length (26 days). Associated symptoms are lower back pain (85.5%), pelvic pain (77.8%) & feeling of nervousness (76.8%). Dysmenorrhea affected social activities (52.2%), family relationship (50.8%) & sport (51.7%). Eighty percent of students know they have a normal menstrual period. Statistical association was found between the dysmenorrhea and participants age. Mothers are the primary menstruation information source (76%). Management patterns were found in the herbal remedies (51.1%), paracetmol (50%). Conclusion: Dysmenorrhea symptoms affect social activities and school absenteeism among south Jordanian adolescent females. This highlights the need to increase awareness regarding aspects of menstruation period.
