تتناول الدراسة توطن مراكز العمران وفقا لمسمياتها في البيئات الجغرافية بمحافظات شمال الصعيد (بني سويف والفيوم والمنيا). وتضم منطقة الدراسة ما يقرب من 750 مركز عمراني ريفي وحضري ينتمي لعصور تاريخية مختلفة وفي نطاقات جغرافية متنوعة. وقد صنفت الدلالة الجغرافية لأسماء قرى منطقة الدراسة إلى خمس مجموعات رئيسة: دلالة مورفولوجية، دلالة مائية، دلالة حيوية، دلالة مناخية، دلالة حضارية، وأسماء أخرى ليس لها دلالة. وقد قسمت هذه المجموعات الرئيسة وفقا للتصنيف الدلالي إلى دلالات فرعية؛ فمثلا الدلالة المورفولوجية جاءت بثلاثة عناصر فرعية تحتوي بأدائه أو لاحقة باسم المركز العمراني؛ ارتفاع وتضرس السطح (جبل – تل – كوم)، استواء وتقعر السطح (طن – وادي – نزلة)، تكوينات السطح (الحجر – رمل – دقش – طين أو غرين). وتضم الدلالة الحضارية أكثر من عشر مجموعات فرعية. ومن التوطن الجغرافي لأسماء المراكز العمرانية وفقا للقطاعات الجغرافية، اتضح توافق مدلول أسماء تلك المراكز بما يتفق نسبيا مع المعطيات الجغرافية والبيئية بقطاعات منطقة الدراسة. وقد خرج البحث بسيادة الدلالة الحضارية في أسماء المراكز العمرانية بمنطقة الدراسة، وكان لها مركز الصدارة مقارنة بالدلالات الأخرى. ويرجع ذلك للأهمية التاريخية والحضارية لمنطقة الدراسة التي تعاقبت عليها عصور تاريخية متعاقبة تركت بصماتها على أسماء القرى بالمنطقة. وتوصي الدراسة بأهمية دراسة الأسماء الجغرافية ودلالتها وبخاصة زيادة التوجه المحلي والعربي بعقد المؤتمرات الخاصة بالأسماء الجغرافية، وكذلك الاهتمام العربي بالأسماء الجغرافية وتكويدها لحفظ الهوية العربية، وكذلك إدراك أهمية اللغة العربية ودلالات المعاني فيها.
