الرحمة تستعمل في حالة العطف والإحسان، ويرتبط معناها بالرقة والعطف في اللغة، نقيضها القسوة والعنف، والإنسان الذي يتصف بالرحمة يتميز بكثير من الاحترام والمحبة بين الناس سواء كان مسلما أم غير مسلم، لأن الرقة والعطف صفة قد يتسم بها القوي والضعيف، المسلم والمشرك، فالوالدان رحيمان بأبنائهم، والأنبياء رحماء بأقوامهم، ومن يتمتع بالعافية قد يرحم المريض، والغني يرحم المحتاج، وغيرها من الأمثلة- والرحمة تمنع الإنسان من ارتكاب كثير من الأمور التي تبعده عن الإنسانية، فما بالنا لو علمنا أن الله سبحانه وتعالى اختار لنفسه صفة الرحمة وسمى ذاته بالرحمن الرحيم، واختار للبشرية نبيا رحيما ثم جعل الدين الذي أتى به دين رحمة، وكل ما ترتبط بالرحمة من مسميات ترتبط بالعمل الصالح. فالرحمة صفة حسنة محمودة ولما كانت كذلك لا بد أن يكون ارتباطها بالإسلام كبيرا، لأن الدلائل من القرآن والسنة تبين أن هذا الدين هو دين رحمة وهي أهم صفة في الدين الإسلامي حتى أن الباحث عن الرحمة في الإسلام ليجد الرحمة الغرض الأساسي من البعثة النبوية، فمن رحمة الله تعالى بالعباد أن أرسل للبشر نبيا رحيما ودين رحمة، لأن الله تعالى أختار لنفسه أن يكون رحيما وجعل الرحمة تساوي اسمه العظيم في قوله (قُلِ ادْعُوا اللَّهَ أَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمَنَ أَيًّا مَا تَدْعُوا فَلَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى) (الإسراء 110)؛ حتى ذهب بعض العلماء إلى أن اسم الله الأعظم إما الله وإما الرحمن، وورد اسم الله الرحمن في مواضع من القرآن، واقترن في بعضها باسمه الرحيم فقط، من غير أن يقترن بغيره. واخترت لهذا البحث أن يبين ارتباط الرحمة في الإسلام وأهميتها في البعثة النبوية، ويلزم قبل البدء بذكر الرحمة أن نعرف المعنى اللغوي للرحمة، ثم التفصيل بارتباطها بصفات الله تعالى وأسمائه ثم نبيه الكريم (صلى الله عليه وسلم) ثم ما جاء في الاسلام موصوفا بالرحمة أو مسمى بها.

Mercy is a good and commendable attribute, and as it is, its connection to Islam must be great, because the evidence from the Quran and Sunnah shows that this religion is a religion of mercy, which is the most important attribute in the Islamic religion, so that the seeker of mercy in Islam can find mercy is the main purpose of the Prophet's mission, it is mercy from Allaah to his worshipper to send to the human being a merciful prophet and a religion of mercy, because Allaah has chosen for himself to be merciful and to make mercy equal to His great name in His saying (Say: Call Allah, or invoke the merciful, whatever you call Him).
