This study is timely to shed light on the phenomenon of the stigmatization of mental illness in Algeria and exploring, on the basis of a comprehensive approach, the ways in which the three dimensions (cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral) of the stigma attached to mental health disorders are found and articulated in the spontaneous discourse of potential actors of discrimination We conducted a qualitative focus group study on participants from targeted populations (health professionals vs. general public). The results show that the speeches collected confirm the importance of the phenomenon of stigma associated with mental health disorders, in the general public, but also among health professionals. Without considering them legitimate, the participants emphasize how difficult it is to detach from stigmatizing beliefs or perceptions. In Algeria, stigmatization and exclusion are social realities facing the patient. Cette étude vient à point nommé pour donner un éclairage sur le phénomène de la stigmatisation de la maladie mentale en Algérie et explorer sur la base d’une démarche compréhensive la façon dont les trois dimensions (cognitive, attitudinale et comportementale) du stigma attaché aux troubles de la santé mentale se retrouvent et s’articulent dans les discours spontanés des acteurs potentiels de discrimination. Nous avons effectué une étude qualitative par focus groups sur des populations ciblées (professionnels de santé vs grand public). Les résultats et les discours recueillis affirment l’importance du phénomène du stigma associé aux troubles de santé mentale, dans le grand public, mais aussi chez les professionnels de santé. Sans pour autant les considérer comme légitime, le participants soulignent à quel point il est difficile de se détacher de croyance ou de perceptions stigmatisantes. Ce qui résulte qu’en Algérie, la stigmatisation et l’exclusion sont des réalités sociales auxquelles le malade est confronté. |
