لما وجد الباحث أن عددا كبيرا من الشعراء العباسيين المشهورين أو المغمورين قد ذاقوا ويلات السجن، وخاضوا في ظلمته، وأرقوا في عتمته، وأن أخبارهم وآثارهم موزعة متفرقة في كتب الأدب والتاريخ على غير نظام، جد في البحث عن هؤلاء الشعراء وفي دراسة آثارهم دراسة وصفية نفسية إذ وجد الباحث أن أصلح مرتكز لفهم شعر السجون هو البدء من الحالة النفسية للسجين في سجنه، وان الشعر الذي خرج من السجن لا يمكن تذوقه بعيدا عن القيد والسجان والظلمة والقضبان، وصراع السجين مع عالمه الجديد القاسي، ومعاناته المخوفة؛ وأن ذلك مفتاح قصائد المدح والرثاء والاستعطاف والتوسل والبكاء ، والحنين والشوق فبحث في أشعار هؤلاء عن الشكوى من السجن وسكونه وظلمته وغلظة السجان وإزعاجه وسوطه، وليل السجن الطويل وعتمته، وبين الباحث آثار الخوف والتعب والألم في شعرهم السجني، وتلمس الباحث نظرة الأمل في أشعارهم وهم يرقبون الغد وكابوس الوحدة يملا عليهم أيامهم ليحسبوها ويعدوها عدا. ونظر الباحث في شعر شعراء السجون عن الحياة وما فيها من صيف وشتاء ومدح وهجاء، ولم يجد الباحث في قصائد السجن ذكرا للحر او البرد أو المطر والرعد ولا وجد في شعرهم هجاء أو كثير حديث عن السجن والسجان والحنين والحرمان، والشكوى والعتاب وما فيها من قيد وقضبان، وطعام وشراب، وتحد وصمود ووهن واستسلام، وإنفة أو ذل، وتصبر أو توسل واسترحام. وتتبع الباحث أسباب سجن الشعراء المتعددة المتنوعة، وعرض العجيب المستطرف منها، والغريب المستهجن فيها، ثم خاض في ملامح هذا الشعر وخصائصه ليستخرج ما انماز به، وما تغلب عليه.

The researcher found that the most correct way to understand prison's poetry is to start from the psychological state of the prisoner in his prison, and that the poetry that came out of prison can not be without the feeling with the restriction, the prisons, the darkness and the bars, and the prisoner's struggle with his new harsh world and his fearful suffering, And that would be the beginning to elegiac, entreaty, appeal, tenderness, weeping and desire poetry, so he researched at the poems about these complaints related to the prison and silence and injustice and the hardness of the jailer and his disturbance and whip, and the long night of the prison and its darkness and the researcher explained the effects of the fear and fatigue and pain in their prison poetry and the researcher looked hope in their poetry as they were looking forward to tomorrow while the nightmare of loneliness filling their days to calculate the day after day. The researcher looked at the poetry of prisoner poets regarding with the life and the summer and winter, praise and lampoonery The researcher did not find in the poems of the prison any mention of the sea or the cold or the rain and the thunder, and there is no speech in their poems about lampoonery or more speech about prison, jailer, deprivation or tenderness, complaints, reproach including restrictions and limitations and bars, food and drink, challenge, defiance and steadfastness and weakness and surrender, and pride or humiliation, and patience or solicit and Petition. The researcher follows the various different reasons for the imprisonment of the poets, and the displayed the strangest, most extreme, and the most hated of it, and then concentrated in the features of this poetry and its characteristics to extract its advantages and disadvantages.
