المستخلص: لعب الأزهر الشريف دورا مهما عبر تاريخه الطويل في الحفاظ على الهوية الإسلامية واستمر هذا الدور في العصر الحديث حتى الآن. اعتمدت الدراسة على وثائق الخارجية المصرية التي ألقت الضوء على دور الأزهر الشريف في تقديم كافة أنواع الدعم العلمي والثقافي عن طريق العناية بالوافدين وتوفير المطبوعات الدينية اللازمة وارسال البعثات وترجمة معاني القرآن مقرؤة ومسموعة عبر الإذاعة بالإضافة إلى ذلك إنشاء المعاهد الدينية ودعم المراكز الثقافية حول العالم. أولت مصر اهتماما بأفريقيا عقب ثورة 1952. ولما كان للأزهر الشريف من مكانة كبيرة دينية حرص عبدالناصر على تدعيم العلاقات مع مختلف الدول عن طريق الأزهر وتعميق العلاقات الدبلوماسية. هذا وقد قضى قانون تطوير الأزهر عام 1961 على أن الزهر هو الهيئة الإسلامية الكبرى التي تقوم على حفظ التراث الإسلامي ودراسته ونشره. أضف إلى ذلك كافح الأزهر الشريف الإرهاب والتطرف وذلك من خلال نشر الدعوة الإسلامية بالكلمة في ربوع العالم. الهدف من هذا البحث هو إبراز دور الأزهر الشريف في نشر وسطية الإسلام.

Al-Azhar had played a major role through its long history to preserve the Islamic identity and that is still the situation till now. The study had relied upon the documents that the Egyptian foreign ministry had offered, which had emphasized the role of Al-Azhar El sharif in offering all kinds of scientific and cultural support for the foreign students and providing to them any printed religious document that they need, and sending the missions and translating the meaning of the Quran words either in readable or audible version through radio broadcasting, in addition to establishing the religious institutions and supporting the cultural centers all around the World. Egypt had offered great care to Africa after the Egyptian revolution July 1952. And in accordance to the great religious status that Al-Azhar has, president Gamal Abd el Nasr was caring to reinforce the Egyptian relationship with the different countries through the role of Al-Azhar and deepening the diplomatic relationships with the respective countries. And the law of Al-Azhar development of 1961 had stated that Al-Azhar is the biggest Islamic authority that do preserve the Islamic heritage and teaches and publish it. Also, Al-Azhar had fighter against terrorism and extremism through the publication of its missionary work all the around the World. The aim of this study is to emphasize the role that Al-Azhar plays in publishing the moderate Islamic thinking.
