تعددت مظاهر الآخر في الرواية العراقية في السنوات الأخيرة، فالآخر ليس بالضرورة البعيدة جغرافياً، أو صاحب العداء التاريخي أو التنافس الدائم، كما في رواية (عصفور من الشرق) لتوفيق الحكيم، والروايات الأخرى التي على غرارها، إذ يمكن للذات أن تنقسم على نفسها، أو يحارب بعضها البعض الآخر، فالأنا العربية تشظت وانقسمت أنواعا متصارعة فيما بينها، بعدما كانت محسومة في السابق، في صراع الأنا العربية مع الأخر الأجنبي، وهذا التشظي، وسم الرواية العربية والمعاصرة بالتعقيد والغموض، فهناك أخر داخلي، وأخر خارجي، والداخلي ينقسم إلى أقسام عدة، وقد قمنا بدراسة كلا النوعين في رواية (الكافرة)، وبما أننا في صدد دراسة الأخر فلابد من دراسة (الأنا) لترابطهما الشديد مع بعضهما فلا وجود للآخر من دون وجود الذات (الأنا)، لذلك قسمنا البحث على مبحثين، وتمهيد، التمهيد: تناول ثنائية الأنا والآخر، وصورة الأخر في رواية الكافرة وتناول المبحث الأول: الآخر الداخلي وأنواعه وتناول المبحث الثاني: الآخر الخارجي ثم الخاتمة وقائمة المصادر. وعلى الرغم من أن رواية (الكافرة) عنيت بجذور الإرهاب الديني، إلا أن (الآخر) كان واضح فيها، فالمرأة كانت هي (الآخر) على امتداد الرواية، وعانت ما عانت من الظلم والاضطهاد من المجتمع الذكوري الذي يمثل (الأنا)، حتى تتحول المرأة في نهاية الرواية إلى (الأنا) ويصبح الرجل هو (الآخر)، بتغير المكان والزمان.
