The aim of this research paper is to identify the importance of credit information systems in providing the required detailed data to enable lending bodies to take the best credit decisions. The research is based on how credit information systems contribute to credit decision-making, and on the efficiency of the Algerian model. The study concluded that credit information systems consist of databases as well as institutional, technological and legal framework that support the efficiency of their performance. These systems provide credit reports that enable decision makers to select the highest rating client with lowest level of risk. Moreover, It showed that Algeria adopts the official model that represents the centrality of risk; and that a legislative environment has been created to develop the latter. However, according to the index of credit information issued by the world bank, the coverage of credit information in Algeria is still lagging behind compared to many other countries.
