المستخلص: All praise be to God, the Lord of the worlds, who chose for His servants the seal of prophets and messengers, the guide to the true understanding of religion. In principle, defamation is impermissible. However, the extent of the evil and harm some people may cause others may be so great that it renders cautioning and warning others of their evil is in the best interest of the public. In such an instance, it is permissible to point out their mistakes and expose their evil. The Shari'ah permits Muslims to expose the evil of offenders when their harm is detrimental to Muslims. This paper focuses on the issue of defamation and discusses the most important relevant juristic rulings. The paper discusses the following: 1- The ruling on ta'zir (disciplinary action) for defamation. 2- The ruling on defaming a Muslim. 3- The ruling on defaming scholars and preachers. 4- The ruling on defamation between spouses. 5- The ruling on defaming apostates. 6- The ruling on defaming those who receive a prescribed legal punishment for an offense. 7- The ruling on defaming those who publicize their sins. 8- The ruling on defaming innovators, the misguided, and hypocrites. 9- The ruling on defaming frauds and deceivers. 10- The ruling on defaming those who commit perjury. The paper also comprises an introduction, preface, conclusion, and the most important resources and references. And God is the One Who grants success and He is the Guide to the right path.
