أدى يهود مصر دوراً اقتصادياً كبيراً في تاريخ مصر إذ كانوا المسيطرين على الاقتصاد المصري إلى جانب المسيحيين، وسبب سيطرتهم هذه تعود إلى عملهم في الربا الذي حرمه الدين الإسلامي، والسبب الثاني تمتعهم بنظام الامتيازات الأجنبية، وما يوفره هذا النظام من إعفاء تام أو شبه تام من الضرائب، فضلاً عن ذلك امتلاكهم موارد مالية عن آبائهم وأجدادهم، وعملهم في مهن يعتقد المسلمون بأنها لا تناسبهم اجتماعياً مثل الحياكة والصباغة وغيرها، ومن هذه المنطلقات أتى هذا البحث لدراسة الدور المالي ليهود مصر متضمناً دراسة دورهم في (الضرائب- القروض- البنوك- البورصة- شركات التأمين) وترك أنشطتهم الاقتصادية الأخرى لدراسات أخرى. إذ كان يهود مصر إلى جانب الأقباط هم جباة الضرائب في مصر وبالأخص أبان الحملة الفرنسية 1798- 1801، أما فيما يخص دورهم في القروض فقد قامت بعض العوائل اليهودية بإقراض الحكومة المصرية الكثير من القروض وأنقذت ميزانية الدولة من الانهيار، كذلك كان لهم دوراً مهماً في تأسيس البنوك وشركات التأمين وهذا ما سيفصله البحث.
Jews of Egypt played a major economic role in the history of Egypt, because they were dominant on the Egyptian economy as well as Christians, and the reason for their control of these belong to their work in the usury that which considered prohibited in the Islamic religion, and the second reason is that they enjoy foreign concessions system, and provided a system of complete exemption or Almost complete from tax, moreover possessing financial resources from parents and grandparents, and their work in occupations Muslims believe that it does not suit them socially, such as knitting, dyeing and others, so these perspectives brought this research to study the financial role of the Jews of Egypt, including the study of their role in the (tax - loans - banks - bourse - insurance companies) and leave the other economic activities of other studies. As the Jews of Egypt as well as Copts are the tax collectors in Egypt, especially during the French campaign in 1798-1801, either in terms of their role in lending some Jewish families have had to lend the Egyptian government a lot of loans and saved the state budget from collapse, as well as they had an important role in the establishment of banks, insurance companies and this what will discuss in this research in detail.
