سيطر الشعور بالاغتراب على الكتاب والمثقفين بل معظم أفراد المجتمع المصري في القرن العشرين، وأصبح ظاهرة متفشية بشكل مزعج في ذلك القرن حتى أصبح كأنه مرض أصيب به الإنسان الحديث، مما جعله ينسحب على شخصيات الروايات عند إبراهيم عبد المجيد وغيره من الروائيين في جيله. وبالنظر في معظم روايات إبراهيم عبد المجيد نجد هذه الشخصيات المستلبة التي تتسم بالضعف والإحساس الشديد بالفشل والانحسار والضعف المتمكن منهم مما يؤدي بهم إلى الاستلام للقوى المحيطة دون مقاومة إلا قليلا، ونجدهم يصيبهم اليأس التام من كل شيء، فأمسى بينهم وبين واقعهم مسافات شاسعة، فكادوا لا يشعرون بما يدور حولهم، لأن هذا الواقع الفاسد كان السبب المباشر في قتل أحلامهم الجميلة الطامحة في تحقيق حياة أفضل. فقد كان إبراهيم عبد المجيد – مثله في ذلك مثل جيله – يرى انهيار الأحلام واهتزاز الثوابت التي كان يؤمن بها، وقد تأثر الكاتب بعدد من الاتجاهات والفنون الأدبية المختلفة لكنه تمثل كل هذا تمثلا واعيا وهو ما أفاد في تشكل بنية عالمه الروائي، وخرج من ذلك بأسلوبه الخاص وصوته المائز الساعي للتجديد. وقد عنى إبراهيم عبد المجيد في تصويره شخصياته بالجانب النفسي وسبر العالم الداخلي ناقلا أفكارها وأحاسيسها وأحلامها، مستعينا بتقنيات تيار الوعي وشخصيات التيار المشار إليه غالبا ما تكون عاطفية أو مضطربة أو شاذة، كما برع الكاتب في إبراز الأحلام والكوابيس التي تراها هذه الشخصيات وكذلك أحلام اليقظة المخيفة المفزعة التي تصور الجو النفسي المضطرب نتيجة معاناتها الكبيرة. وهناك مجموعة من الدوافع تذهب بهذه الشخصيات إلى الإحساس العميق بالسقوط في هوة الاغتراب والاستلاب وما يترتب على ذلك من الإحساس بعدم الثقة بالنفس وعدم القدرة على التكيف والقلق والمخاوف وعقدة الاضطهاد وضعف أحاسيس الشعور وغياب الإحساس بالتمسك.
