|b There is a great importance of fish as a one source of protein in many countries of the African continent, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than fifth of the population suffers from chronic undernutrition. Although Africa has abundant inland water resources (fresh and saline) and marine coasts, it lacks integrated management and rational exploitation; so Africa contributes only about 10.2% of global production, and its fish exports do not exceed 7.2%, according to the 2016 statistics. The continent's marine and inland fisheries suffer from many threats and environmental hazards, such as climate change, pollution, and excessive and illegal exploitation of fisheries resources, as well as the lack of necessary equipment, infrastructure and difficult access to markets. There is an urgent need for the development of African fisheries through the management and exploitation of fish stocks in accordance with ecosystems, prevention of illegal fishing activities, adoption advanced technology to increase competitiveness, as well as modernizing facilities, supporting fishing communities and developing sustainable fisheries industries in the continent.
