The present study mainly investigates Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird in the light of Bakhtin's theory of time and space. The central research question of the study is "What are the tempo-spatial markers in the novel and how they affect people's psychology and behavior?" For this reason, a critical analysis is applied to Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. It is analysed within a certain framework with reference to Bakhtin's major work, The Dialogic Imagination and Bachelard's major work, The Poetics of Space. Harper Lee is best known as the only author to win the Pulitzer Prize for her first and only novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, in 1961. Her experiences grow up as an outsider in Monroeville, Alabama with her childhood friend, Truman Capote, provided the basis for the classic novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is presented as a portrayal of good and bad in a small town. Through introducing several events, Lee criticizes the white folks of the town conspiring to convict an innocent black man. On the other hand, she reveals an attempt by a lawyer to protect him. She also attempts to protect another person, Boo, who kills an evil person to prevent him from killing Atticus's children. Lee chooses an old American town as a place of events at time during which America suffers from the lack of morality and discrimination, to show how a place with some of its details affects people's morality and way of thinking. Depending on Bachelard's book, The Poetics of Space, there are so many objects in the town that express how the idea of these objects influences people who live there. He focuses on the house, its interior and outdoor context. Finally, Lee also uses the spacio-temporal markers to show the characters' relationship to space. For example, the house is considered as a shelter. She reveals that Maudie, Scout and Boo's houses express the notion of protection. The school also represents the idea of being involved with others. The court itself is a place of injustice which has a clock that does not reveal the real time, but how people behave in it in relation to the long time the juries take to deliberate if Tom is guilty or not. Other markers are unfolded to highlight how events emphasize where and when they happened and affected the human emotions and actions.
