Theatre is linked to heritage since its inception and forms a source of inspiration for playwrights. It is the comprehensive source in which they find their cause, because it represents one of the components of the nation and the continuity of its excellence, and because it is something that exists in Arabic, calling it from behind the ages. Therefore, the return to it was the dominant feature that characterized contemporary theatrical works that strived to establish the form and content of Arab theater, as well as contemporary Arab poetic theatre, which is part of these theatrical works, as its pioneers went to the heritage. They used it in their works in various forms, different from one theatrical poet to another, each according to his view of this heritage.

يرتبط المسرح بالتراث منذ نشأته الأولى، ويشكل نبعا لإلهام الكتاب المسرحيين، فهو المصدر الشامل الذي يجدون فيه ضالتهم، لأنه يمثل أحد مقومات الأمة واستمرارية تميزها، ولأنه شيء قائم في الذات العربية يناديها من وراء العصور، لذلك كانت العودة إليه السمة الغالبة التي ميزت الأعمال المسرحية المعاصرة التي سعت جاهدة إلى تأصيل المسرح العربي شكلا ومضمونا، وكذلك المسرح الشعري العربي المعاصر الذي يعد جزءا من هذه الأعمال المسرحية، إذ رحل رواده إلى التراث ينهلون منه ويوظفونه في أعمالهم بأشكال متعددة تختلف من شاعر مسرحي إلى آخر كل حسب نظرته إلى هذا التراث.
