This article reports the results of a study that examined the relative effectiveness of the UN strategy to combat violence against women in armed conflicts. The study also looked into the perceptions of the states towards all forms of violence against women. The study is based on the assumption that the violence against women is a violation of human rights, and the governments in collaboration with the United Nations could reduce or alleviate the extent of the afflicted violence against women during armed conflicts. A content analysis of the data gathered from the literature review comprising the timeline of the major incidents of sexual violence against women, which is used as a tactic of war in various armed conflicts, has been carried out. The results of the study indicated that the United Nations conventions adopted to combat the violence against women were effective to a certain extent and led to reducing the violence against women and to boosting gender equalities. Further research is recommended in order to determine the extent of the generalizability of the findings of the present study into other contexts and situations. |
