|b The wealth of the Middle East is derived from the production and export of oil and gas. The hydrocarbon industry impacts significantly on the region, through the wealth that it generates for the governments of the oil-rich countries, the movement of labour, flows of capital (both investment and economic assistance) and to a lesser extent flows of trade. In recent years many of the oil-rich countries in the region have attempted to diversity their economies. Oil prices have undergone sharp and sudden fluctuation since the discovery of oil until the present .These fluctuations are a result of a combination of factors including the relationship between supply and demand, political and climatic factors. The analysis of the economies of Arab oil-producing countries highlights the dependency on the export of the oil only. Furthermore, price fluctuations are found to lead to long-term damage to these countries as oil and financial returns constitute the primary resource to finance economic development in these countries and financing of investment in the oil sector.
