المستخلص: Strategic management is based on the belief that an organization should continually monitor internal and external events and trends so that timely changes can be made as needed. An organization must be capable of astutely identifying and adapting to change. The need to adapt to change leads the organization to key questions such as: what kind of business should the firm engage in? Is the firm in the right field? Should the firm reshape its business? And many more which would put the organisation on the right tract to grow. Strategic Management can also be defined as "the identification of the purpose of the organisation and the plans and actions to achieve the purpose. It is that set of managerial decisions and actions that determine the long term performance of a business enterprise. It involves formulating and implementing strategies that will help in aligning the organization and its environment to achieve organisational goals". In recent years small and medium industries most especially in the northwest Nigeria are facing serious challenge of failure which lead most of them to closure of the industry, along this line the researcher intend to investigate the real problem behind the set back in this important sector of IV the economy. The research makes an assumption that the problems are lack of strategic management initiative in the industries which is stated in the research problem as; 1. Do food industries in North-western Nigeria use strategic management thinking in their operations? 2. What is the relationship between strategic management and sales volume of food industries in North-western Nigeria? 3. What is the relationship between strategic management and profitability of food industries in North-western Nigeria? 4. What is the relationship between strategic management and business growth of food industries in North-western Nigeria? When the research was conducted data were gathered through questionnaire which was directly administered on some food industries. It was realised that the real problem behind the failure is attached with the current economic crises in the world at large and specifically in Nigeria, lack of capital and lack of incentives and good atmosphere from the government to the investors in this important sector of the economy. Shortage of professional human resources is another important factor that bedevilling those industries. Another problem which the researcher realised is normally the owners are the those that managed the industries and V autocratic leadership always prevail in this situation which also has a negative impact on the running of modern industries. Lastly it was recommends that; 1. Incentives for the owners and investor in this sector, most especially through long term loan and through redistributive function of government in the economy. 2. Establishing a training package for those that are interested in investing or creating these kinds of industries for them to have a prior knowledge of all what it takes to be a successful in the business. 3. It is very important for the industries to hire and recruit adequate and professional human resource. And routine training of the existing staff. 4. Management of these industries should always move with the modern technological advancement most especially machines and other tools.
