|b The events surrounding Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1960) exemplify the role of race in the determination of judicial outcomes within a divided society. Within this paper, the interaction between race, economic power- or the lack of it-, and social stratification or classification becomes clear as Atticus, the protagonist, seeks justice for a black man, Tom Robinson. The text also touches on the potential for white interests being at the heart of the white men’s efforts to help minorities, such as in Atticus’ attempt to seek justice for Tom Robinson. The position is that Atticus only seeks to build his name and reputation, as opposed to being truly interested in finding justice for the oppressed. Applying the Critical Race Theory perspective demonstrates the manner in which the social, economic, and historical factors lead to the diminished possibility of positive outcomes for minorities within a system that is based on racial majoritarian beliefs and interests.
