The novel has played a prominent role in modern criticism, for it is considered one of the most significant literary arts in modern critical arena, as it provides a wide area through which the author can address several topics, especially those related to social issues. Most novels draw their subjects out from the core of reality; hence the concept of marginalization preoccupied a central status in the novels of Shawki Karim. The novelist meant deliberately to reflect the phenomenon of marginalization in most of his fiction. He tried to refer to the forms of marginalization in Iraqi society in general, and the southern community in particular. That is where our choice of the subject matter of the study came from, “The Marginalized in Shawqi Karim Hasan’ Novels". The study selected the novel instead of other literary genres, for it provides sufficient flexibility for research and the ability by which a novelist manages to formulate social events in an aesthetic literary form. All such elements of the novel as characters and events would have their referents that refer to reality from which they stem. The hypothesis of the study tends to look at the concept of marginalization and how it was embodied in the work of Shawqi Karim. We adopted a descriptive analytical methodology in our approach to narrative texts. This approach has sufficient flexibility to deal with these novels. Our analysis of these novels is based on sociological research. The search consists of three Chapters, preceded by Preface and followed by a Conclusion. In Preface, entitled (Marginalization and Novelist Imaginary), we discussed the definition of marginalization, in terms of language, terminology, and in the social and cultural critical glossary, in addition to the uncovering of the marginalized as being invisible in social context and, then, explicating the critical operating space marginalization in literary criticism. Chapter One is entitled "Causes of Marginalization". Chapter Two came to deal with the search for "Manifestations of the marginalized Character". Chapter Three is devoted to the artistic methods that the novelist utilized to present his characters. It is entitled "Techniques for Presenting the Marginalized Character." Most of the work of Shawqi Karim run along one style. Most of the novels revolved around the idea of heroes been migrated from their places of residence searching for a better life beyond the limits of their places where they resided. For most of the author’s characters derived from reality whose their dominant feature was poverty. The marginalization has had a direct impact on the lives of characters, especially in psychological terms. The novels dealt with several topics that remained unspeakable in other narrative novels.
