المستخلص: This paper is intended to investigate the level(s) of Arabic language Mohammed Enani (2012) uses in his translation to Dave Eggers’Zeitoun (2009). The level(s) of language, mainly MSA, are examined with some reference to Grice’s maxims to comment on the accuracy of the Arabic words and expressions used in translation. The analysis also investigates how address forms, mainly parental, as well as vulgar, are rendered in the TT. This helps to judge the extent of the translator’s observation of the level(s) of language of the original text. The analysis shows that the translator frequently uses Quranic Arabic to render some lexical items in the TT. In addition, the prevailing level of Arabic in the TT is MSA. Enani, therefore, manages to present a genuine Arabic literary work that is rich at the level of eloquent words and expressions. However, there are some cases where he uses Egyptian Colloquial Arabic in translation. Hence, the translator seems unneutral, because he is found to be deliberately integrating Colloquial Egyptian-specific items with MSA to create an Egyptian identity to the TT that is hard to be created except through the power of Egyptian Colloquial Arabic.
