يتميز قطاع الصناعة أن له القدرة على استخدام التكنولوجيا الجديدة، وراس المال البشري كما يلعب فيه نشاط البحث والتطوير " R&D " دورا هاما، وفي ظل التحديات العالمية من منافسة دولية وإقليمية ومحلية، أصبح من البديهي تطوير قطاع الصناعي للوصول إلى تعزيز القدرة التنافسية ومن هنا جاءت أهمية تعزيز الشراكة بين القطاع الخاص في الصناعة والجامعات في مجال البحث العلمي، والمشكلة الأساسية للدراسة هو ضعف الشراكة بين الجامعات "كمركز للدراسات والأبحاث التطويرية في عدة مجالات" وقطاع الصناعة "والذي يمثله القطاع الخاص وهو يعتبر مجالا خصبا لتطبيق الأبحاث، وهذا البحث سيناقش طرق تعزيز دور الجامعات في زيادة التنافسية القطاع الصناعة بالمملكة وتحديد طرق لتحسين الروابط بين الحكومة والجامعات البحثية والشركات من أجل تعزيز الابتكار والقدرة التنافسية في قطاع الصناعة، وصولا لاقتصاد قائم على المعرفة، وقد تم مناقشة دوافع القطاع الخاص للقيام بالبحث العلمين، معوقات مشاركة القطاع الخاص في البحث العلمي مع الجامعات، مع التركيز على الوضع بالسعودية، حيث تم توضيح دور الحكومة فيما يخص الشراكة بين القطاع الخاص والجامعات لتعزيز تنافسية قطاع الصناعة في ضوء رؤية المملكة العربية السعودية 2030 وفي نهاية البحث تم الحديث عن احدى تجارب الجامعات في هذا الشأن وهي الملك عبدالله.
