The 30 June events in Egypt captured the interest of the national and international media but each news network covers the same event from a completely different perspective. Such notable discrepancy among news agencies comes back to the fact that there are hidden ideologies reasons behind this shocking contradiction. The present study comparatively analyses the linguistic devices and ideological properties of British and Egyptian news agencies online websites which cover the 30 June events. This study examines the relationship between language and ideology and how such relationship is represented in the analysis of hard news stories. The proposed study demonstrates how systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) can pinpoint the linguistic resources via which these different ends are achieved, focusing on the interpersonal meta function and through choices in the system of Appraisal. Through a comparative analysis of the Egyptian news website Al-Ahram online and the online version of the British newspaper the Guardian with possibly opposing ideologies, the researcher attempts to reveal how these ideologies are represented via a variety of strategic techniques of impersonalisation in electronic media with regard to covering the same event.
