|b This study examines the pragmatic meanings for modal verbs used in Friday's Speech of one of the most renowned religious scholars in Egypt, Dr. Ali Gomaa in order to investigate the related mechanisms which help a speaker reveal his ideas and intentions when communicating with a particular addressee. This study examines their choices in order to urge and persuade. The pragmatic meanings of modal verbs are discussed through Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory in order to show how the linguistic and pragmatic choices of the religious scholars help them to achieve the optimal relevance by achieving the greatest possible cognitive effect for the smallest processing effort.
