قال السيوطي في "الإتقان": "أعلم أن معرفة ذلك -أي: حروف المعاني-من المهمات المطلوبة لاختلاف مواقعها، ولهذا يختلف الكلام والاستنباط بحسبها كما في قوله تعالى: {وَإِنَّا أَوْ إِيَّاكُمْ لَعَلَى هُدًى أَوْ فِي ضَلالٍ مُبِينٍ}(1) فاستعملت (على) في جانب الحق، و(في) في جانب الضلال؛ لأن صاحب الحق كأنه مستعل يصرف نظره كيف شاء، وصاحب الباطل كأنه منغمس في ظلام منخفض لا يدري أين يتوجه"(2) وهذا الباب واسع لدى النحويين، وقد حاول الواحدي النيسابوري بيان معاني الحروف وسبغ أغوارها في ثنايا تفسيره المعروف بـ"البسيط"، بل إنه لم يترك حرفًا من حروف المعاني إلا وتحدث فيه، وأدلى بدلوه، حتى جاء كتابه "البسيط" كأنه قاموسًا جامعًا لحروف المعاني. وفي هذا البحث دراسة لما عالجه الواحدي النيسابوري من حروف المعاني في سورتي البقرة وآل عمران، وفيه ثلاث مسائل: القضية الأولى: هل تأتي (أو) بمعنی (الواو)؟ القضية الثانية: هل تزاد (أن) وتعمل النصب في الفعل المضارع؟ القضية الثالثة: هل تأتي (أم) بمعنى الاستفهام المحض؟
