تعد الأشغال الفنية المعاصرة أكثر انطلاقا، وتطور من حيث تنوع استخدام الخامات، والفكر المبتكر و التقنيات الحديثة و الدارس لمجال الأشغال الفنية هو الذى يتوغل داخل الخامات، التي تمكنه من الوصول إلى أفكاره وصياغتها، ويتم ذلك من خلال التجريب في تلك الخامات والتوليف بينها، وهذه الدراسة تتطلب من الدارس فهم دقيق لتلك الخامات، من حيث الخصائص الشكلية والتشكيلية والتعبيرية ومن حيث عامل المتانة أو مقاومة الجهد لتلك الخامات وفهم الأسس ومعايير التوليف ، حيث يتم صياغتها وبناء هذه الخبرات التقنية في إنتاج مشغولات فنية معاصرة. وتعتبر الأشغال الفنية أحد مجالات التربية الفنية التي تهتم بتنمية ثقافة التفكير، ورفض التصورات التقليدية عن الذكاء وتعريفاته واختباراته الكلاسيكية التي كانت أكثر أدوات و مؤشرات القياس العقلي استخدما "lntellectual Measurement"، وبالتالي إلى تعامل التربويون مع الطلاب في القرن الماضي مستهدفين أساسا الاهتمام بدفعهم إلى تحصيل كم وافر من المعارف ، وتنمية قدراتهم على السلوك المنضبط، والمقبول اجتماعيا، فأكد النظام التعليمي على تنشأة الطفل الذكي المطيع المتبع للتعليمات ، رغم اعتبار أن النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين هو القرن الذى نشط فيه دراسات الابتكار، ورغم أن التفكير الابتكاري يعد من الظواهر النفسية التي لم تحدد بدقة نتيجة اختلاف المختصين حول طبيعة الابتكار ، إلا انه اتبع في دراسة الابتكار نفس نسق ومعايير و آليات قياس الذكاء حيث قسم التفكير الابتكاري إلى (الطلاقة - المرونة - الأصالة)
