المستخلص: Während die Pseudotranslation im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zeitweise fast so etwas wie eine literarische Konvention darstellte, hat sie in der heutigen Zeit eine relativ geringe Bedeutung. Dennoch scheint sie nicht nur im Rahmen von historischen Studien von Belang, gibt sie doch nicht nur Aufschluss darüber, was in einer bestimmten Translationskultur zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt als Übersetzung angesehen wurde, sondern auch darüber, wie die Erwartungen der Leser im Hinblick auf einen Text durch ein Etikett wie „Übersetzung aus dem….“ gesteuert werden können. Der vorliegende Artikel berücksichtigt sowohl historische als auch aktuelle Beispiele und beleuchtet auch den Kontext diverser Pseudotranslationen genauer.

Whereas the pseudo translation almost represented a sort of literary convention in the 18th and 19th century, its importance has waned in the 20th century. Nevertheless, it seems worth while studying these phenomenon, not just as a part of the literary history, but also concerning the question, how readers – and their expectations – can be influenced by such “markers” as “translated from the…”. They do not just offer insight into what was considered a translation at a given point of time in a given translation culture and how different (literary) cultures relate(d) to each other, but they also show us, how readers – and their perception of the text – can be influenced. In the following article, several examples of historical as well as modern pseudo translations and their contexts are analyzed.
