تهدف الدراسة إلى الكشف عن الطرق الشائعة في عملية تزييف المعلومات وتأثير المعلومات المزيفة على المجالات العلمية والاجتماعية والدينية فضلا عن الاقتصادية من خلال دراسة وتحليل موضوع تلوث المعلومات وتأثيره على مستقبل المعرفة البشرية من منظور تاريخي وتقني، إذ تم التركيز على الجذور التاريخية لموضوع التلوث وبحث الدوافع والأهداف التي كانت تقف وراءه. فضلا عن تحديد المجالات الموضوعية التي كانت أكثر عرضة للتلوث من غيرها. كما ناقشت تأثير ثورة المعلومات على تنامي وانتشار ظاهرة تلوث المعلومات وأهم التقنيات التي ساعدت على ذلك. توصلت الدراسة إلى أن الكتب التاريخية والدينية كانت الأكثر عرضة للتحريف والتزييف مقارنة مع المجالات الأخرى، كما توصلت إلى أن شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي بيئة مثالية لتنامي ظاهرة تلوث المعلومات خاصة وأن رواد هذه المواقع في الغالب من الطبقات الاجتماعية التي تتباين في مستوى التعليم والثقافة.
