المستخلص: عند سماع مصطلح نظام رقمي أو بيئة رقمية أو وثيقة رقمية، يتبادر في ذهن الجميع النظام الثنائي المتكون من 0 و1، لكن كيف يمكن لآلة مثل الحاسوب تحويل كل تلك المعلومات إلى رقمين؟ بل ما هو أصل هذا النظام وكيف تم ابتكاره؟ لذلك يهدف البحث إلى تحديد أصل المصطلح ودلالاته بداية من فكرة Francis Bacon حين ابتكر طريقة لتشفير الحروف تم نشرها بعنوان two-letter alphabet سنة 1605، مروراً بـ John Wilkins الذي قام بنشر كتاب سنة 1641 بعنوان Mercury or the Secret and Swift Messenger شرح فيه الأبجدية المكونة من حرفين لـ Bacon، إلى الألماني Gottfried Wilhelm Jeibniz وهو أول من وظف الأرقام بدل الحروف لتشفير الرسائل، وقام بنشر أول ورقة علمية له سنة 1701 بعنوان Essai d'une nouvelle science des nombres ونختم بمرحلة تصميم أول حاسوب رقمي بالكامل سمي بـ ENIAC سنة 1946. كما سيتم تدعيم البحث بأمثلة لكيفية تمثيل الحروف رقمياً والإشارة إلى معايير التميل الرقمي، بالاعتماد على منهج تحليل المحتوى لجملة من الوثائق الأجنبية التي تناولت الموضوع، وكذا سنحاول إزالة اللبس الواضح خاصة في اللغة العربية بين مصطلحات البيئة الرقمية والبيئة الإلكترونية، مع الإشارة إلى مكانة هذه البيئة في المجتمعات العربية.

When you hear the term digital system, digital environment or digital document, everyone comes to think of a binary system of 0 and 1, but how a machine like a computer can convert all the information to two numbers? Yet what is the origin of this system and how was it created? The research aims to identify the origin of the term and its implications from the concept of Francis Bacon when he devised a method of encoding letters published entitled two-letter alphabet in 1605, through John Wilkins, who published a book in 1641 entitled Mercury or Secret and Swift Messenger by the explanation of the alphabet form From two letters of Bacon, to the German Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the first to use numbers instead of letters to encrypt messages, and published his first scientific paper in 1701 entitled Essai d'une nouvelle science des nombres, and we conclude with the design of the first fully digital computer called ENIAC in 1946 . The research will be supported by examples of how to digitize letters and reference to the standards of digital representation based on the methodology of content analysis of foreign documents dealing with the subject. We will also try to eliminate the obvious confusion especially in Arabic language between the terms of the digital environment and the electronic environment, and their role in Arab societies.
