|b There is a rapidly growing interest in today's academic activities (conferences, symposiums, books, journal articles, etc.) to discuss the intersection between post-colonialism and modernity. This paper is a response to: (1) displaying 'modernity' as an exclusively Western product against which all non-Western cultures (including Arabic and Islamic ones) must be measured; and (2) the persistent attempts by Arab and Muslim authors to prove that Islam is compatible with modernity – a trap that this paper asks authors not to fall into. After defining 'modernity,' the paper discusses in details the reasons behind the call for 'decolonizing' and 'provincializing' modernity in the academy. Drawing from the insights of a number of postcolonial theorists, the paper calls Arab-Muslim postcolonial academics (teachers and writers alike) all over the world to 'decolonize' and 'provincialize' the concept of 'modernity'. It also asks them not to adopt the 'colonial mentality' of the inferiority of the Self. The researcher asks: Why should Arab and Muslim authors continue to use Western literary criticism as a reference point in the field of literary theory? Why do they not use instead Arabic literary theory to measure the aesthetics of any literary text? The paper concludes by suggesting 'other' ways of engaging with the question of modernity towards social change and development, i.e. understanding one's own culture and engaging in its tradition.
