520 |d Pour Toynbee, le rôle de l’Islam dans la civilisation contemporaine dépendra essentiellement de l’issue de la situation dans laquelle se trouve aujourd’hui engagée l’humanité tout entière, produite principalement par l’occidentalisation du monde. Cette situation peut finir par une synthèse, comme par une explosion et un désastre. Dans le premier cas, l’Islam pourrait être un renfort et une force en faveur de la tolérance et de la paix ; dans le second cas, il pourrait avoir un rôle destructeur, en tant qu’ingrédient actif d’une révolte violente et destructrice du monde inférieur cosmopolite contre l’humanité occidentale.  
520 |b For Toynbee, the role of Islam in contemporary civilization depends essentially on the state of the situation in which the whole of humanity is today, produced mainly by the westernization of the world. This situation can end up with a synthesis, like an explosion and a disaster. In the first case, Islam could be a reinforcement and a force for tolerance and peace; in the second case, it could have a destructive role, as an active ingredient of a violent and destructive revolt of the cosmopolitan lower world against Western humanity. 
520 |a يرى توينبي أن مساهمة الإسلام في الحضارة الغربية المعاصرة تتوقف بشكل أساسي على الطريقة التي ستنتهي بها الأزمة التي تمر بها الإنسانية المعاصرة، بعد الهيمنة الغربية الكاملة على العالم. ستنتهي هذه الأزمة في نظر توينبي بأحد امرين: إما أن تنتهي إلى مصالحة جديدة بين الأمم والشعوب، أو تنتهي إلى انفجار واقتتال بينها. في الحالة الأولى، ستكون للإسلام مساهمة إيجابية، كقوة من اجل التسامح والسلام العالمي بين الشعوب؛ وأما في الحالة الثانية، فسيكون دور الإسلام سلبيا وتدميريا، كقوة انقلابية في يد البروليتاريا العالمية ضد أسيادهم الغربيين.
