Le vingtième siècle voit le développement de la critique littéraire. L'étude des textes se développe et les écrivains analysent de plus en plus les romans et sont à la recherche du modèle idéal. Barthes décrit cette question dans un ensemble de cours la Préparation du roman au Collège de France. Ce texte commence avec la description de la poésie conduisant au roman. L'écrivain désire une sorte de « renaissance » spirituelle par un texte romanesque préfiguré mais retourne à ses premiers archétypes en tant que fragments. L'éminent professeur écrit une tierce-forme désirant passer du fragment au livre. Celui-ci devient l'aventure d'une écriture reconstruit par fragments en redéfinissant les sens. Barthes décrit ainsi une recherche de la Recherche.

The twentieth century sees the development of the critical literary. The study of the texts proliferates and the writers analyze more and more novels looking for the ideal model. Barthes describes this question in a set of courses The Preparation of the novel at the Collège de France. This text begins with a description of the poetry leading up to the novel. The writer wishes a kind of spiritual « rebirth » by a prefigured novel but returns to his first archetypes as fragments. The eminent professor writes a tierce-form wishing to pass from the fragment to the book. This one becomes the adventure of a writing reconstructed by fragments by redefining the senses. Barthes describes a search for a Search of Lost Time.
