Cross-cultural comparative research on children and their development has changed over time and context. As a result of observing cultural diversity, the variability of educational practices and the relative nature of investment in the various forms of knowledge, researchers have finally acknowledged the principle of variability in development. Comparisons show that while general cognitive structures are applicable to all areas of knowledge that deal with real world, operational abilities develop differently, according to the domain that is being explored, the content, and the individual. Although the same forces are generated in every environment, they undergo different influences, shaping a range of potential abilities and bringing about a qualitative change in human development based on cultural traditions. But what about representations of the body and naive conceptions of biological functions? We set out to explore the effects of informal education and local knowledge acquired in the immediate environment on the conceptions of biological functions held by children living in Mayotte. A preliminary observation prior to a larger study revealed the need to adapt the protocol that is commonly used in this type of research, particularly at the linguistic and discursive levels.
