المستخلص: L’importance de la marche à pied comme mode de déplacement en ville a mobilisé ces dernières années une attention remarquable envers le concept de -Marchabilité urbaine- dans le milieu opérationnel et académique. Des centaines de publications ont vu le jour depuis son apparition cela fait une vingtaine d’années. Malgré ces recherches abondantes et diversifiées, nous restons confus quant à la clarté de la définition de ce concept, notamment d’un point de vue morphologique ; Comment peut-on définir -La marchabilité- urbaine par rapport à la forme de la ville ? Et comment peut on l’évaluer objectivement? Notre approche d’investigation est théorique, elle s’intéresse aux travaux sur ce concept -Marchabilité- dans les champs disciplinaires liès à l’espace urbain comme l’urbanisme et le design urbain. Nous sommes convaincus que pour mesurer la marchabilité d’un espace, sa définition précise est une étape indispensable. Si l’ambiguïté, l’imprécision et la multitude des dimensions est ce qui caractérise ce concept récent, une redéfinition précisant sa relation avec la forme urbaine ne peut qu’être nécessaire pour son opérationnalisation et analyse.

The importance of walking in the city as urban movement mode has attracted a great deal of attention to the concept of – Urban Walkability in both the operational and academic environment. Hundreds of publications have emerged since its inception twenty years ago. Thus, despite the diversified scientific productions, we remain confused about the clarity of the definition of this concept from a morphological point of view. Our investigative approach is theoretical, we are interested in the work on this concept -Walkability- in the disciplinary fields related to urban morphology, urban design, and urbanism. We are convinced that to measure the walkability of a space, its precise definition is an essential step. If the ambiguity, the vagueness and the multitude of dimensions are what characterizes this recent concept, a redefinition specifying its relation with the urban form can only be necessary for its operationalization and analysis.
