المستخلص: In this article, I propose to consider island spatiality, as both a conceptual vehicle and an empirical context, in a bid to investigate thematic and rhetorical modalities of transformation in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954) and Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones (1998). Thematic modalities comprise a discussion of confinement, the ensuing context of madness (which typifies the way a physical locus produces a mental space) and the heterotopic potential of island spatiality while rhetorical modalities encompass the array of shifting and sliding symbolical associations attached to island representation.

Cet article se propose d’examiner la spatialité insulaire, à la fois comme véhicule conceptuel et contexte empirique, dans le but d’analyser les modalités thématiques et rhétoriques de la notion de transformation dans Lord of the Flies de William Golding (1954) et The Farming of Bones d’Edwidge Danticat (1998). Les modalités thématiques comprennent une discussion sur le confinement, le contexte de folie qui en découle (caractérisant la manière dont un lieu physique produit un espace mental) et le potentiel hétérotopique de la spatialité insulaire, tandis que les modalités rhétoriques englobent la gamme d'associations symboliques mouvantes et glissantes attachées à la représentation insulaire.
