The phenomenon of terrorism and extremism is the most prominent social phenomenon in our modern era, and this phenomenon has included many Islamic societies and others .. تعد ظاهرة الإرهاب من أكثر مظاهر العنف الذي تفشي في المجتمعات الدولية، فمنذ أوائل السبعينات من القرن الماضي وكلمة "الإرهاب" ومشتقاتها من أمثال "إرهابي" و"الإرهاب المضاد" وغيرها قد غزت أدبيات جميع فروع العلوم الاجتماعية. حيث أضحى مصطلح الإرهاب من الاصطلاحات الأكثر شيوعاً في العالم، في وقت تزداد فيه نسبة الجريمة ارتفاعاً وأشكالها تنوعا، أصبح الإرهاب واقعاً مقلقاً ومزعجاً. فالمؤلفون في ميادين علم النفس، وعلم الإجرام وعلم الاجتماع، والفكر الديني...إلخ، انكبوا على دراسة هذا الموضوع أكثر من أي ظاهرة اجتماعية-سياسية أخرى في عصرنا. تشكل ظاهرة الإرهاب والتطرف أبرز الظواهر الاجتماعية في عصرنا الحديث وقد شملت هذه الظاهرة كثيراً من المجتمعات الإسلامية وغيرها...وقد خرجت هذه الظاهرة من كونها حالة محدودة إلى أن أصبحت ظاهرة دولة، واختلطت فيها المفاهيم والتصورات، كما اختلطت الأسباب والدوافع وبعد أن كانت هذه الحالات موجهة ضد القوى الصليبية والصهيونية لحالات التحرر والدفاع عن الأراضي الفلسطينية مثلاً أصبحت صورة للعنف أو الإرهاب غير محدد المعالم. ولقد تأثرت بعض الدول العربية والإسلامية بهذه الظاهرة التي أصبحت موجهة ضد المدنيين والأبرياء وكذلك ضد قوى الأمن والجيش في هذه الدول وأصبحت هذه الظاهرة-أيضاً-شاملة لكافة المجتمعات والأديان والأعراف، وخطورة هذه الظاهرة أنها تمارس باسم الدين والتعصب الإسلامي مما وصم المجتمعات الإسلامية بهذه الصفة.
