This case study is the first one in Jordan which tries to tackle the transportation problems through building our own geodatabase for the study area and adopting the geographic information system (GIS) with other applications integrated with it to reach what so called intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Shortest path and closest facilities were examples of utilizing the ITS to provide a proper solutions for decision makers. Shortest path and closest facility applications which is based on GIS and Dijkstra algorithm considered as a powerful tool of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)technology which is used to analyze the transportation networks. All efforts are directed now a days to adopt the (ITS)technology as an effective way to connect the transportation infrastructure networks to solve the transportation sector problems such as congestion, incidents, maintenance, and future expansions. (ITS) solutions considered as an optimal solution in terms of saving time, reducing costs, and optimizing efforts. These advantages put the (ITS)technology as a powerful and effective tool for modern transportation strategies. Providing a modern and effective transportation system may considered as one of the most important pillars in any country to serve both passengers and goods from one area to another. Such modern and comprehensive system will surely facilitate and contribute effectively in economic growth of every state. Recently the specilists concentrate more and more on transportation systems because of huge demand and needs for more improvements. In this research, specific area of Amman suffering from high traffic has been chosen to apply the case study using GIS technology aiming to figure out the shortest path to move from one point to another saving time and efforts. Such kind of applicable models will help the decision makers to figure out the best way for planning using GIS technology which is considered as the best technology through using transportation systems and analyzing modeling known as GIS-T. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is an extraordinary sort of data framework that is utilized to input, store, retrieve, process, analyze and picture geospatial information and data so as to help choice making. GIS for Transportation (GIS-T) alludes to the standards and utilization's of applying geographic data advancements to transportation problems, and applies in a significant part of the wide extent of transportation and logistics, for example, transportation well being investigation, travel demand analysis, traffic observing and control, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), directing and planning … and so forth. The aim of the study is to examine the application of finding the shortest path and closest facility through analyzing the transportation network within the study area using Arc GIS. Results obtained show a high level of accuracy in finding the shortest path and closest facility between two selected points with minimum time and distance. The goal of the study was to cover the whole of Greater Amman Municipality, but due to shortage of available data from its source, it was limited to specific areas. Hoping to be practical example to modeling the rest of network to have comprehensive and better results.
