لأعداد أي خريطة جيدة للأبحاث الجغرافية، لابد من اختيار طريقة التمثيل الخرائطي المناسبة بوسائلها كافة وأساليب تمثيلها، وذلك باعتبار أن الخريطة تعد أداة مهمة بالنسبة للجغرافي، تمكنه من إيصال المعلومات والبيانات بصورة أسرع وأوضح في الفهم والإدراك قياسا بالاعتماد على الأرقام المطلقة والجداول والشروحات المطولة، لذلك فإن للخرائط مكانة مهمة في نظم المعلومات الجغرافية، إذ يؤدي استخدامها في تصميم الخرائط بشكل أكثر مرونة من أي طريقة يدوية أو كارتوكرافية تقليدية. تهدف الدراسة إلى توضيح الخصائص الحرارية في إقليم الفرات الأوسط الجغرافي، وتمثيلها كارتوكرافيا، بأفضل الطرائق والوسائل الكارتوكرافية المتبعة من خلال الاعتماد على تقنية نظم المعلومات الجغرافية، لغرض إبراز التباين المكاني والزماني للمتغير المراد تمثيله، حيث اعتمدت الدراسة على برامج (Arc GIS 10) في أعداد خرائط درجة الحرارة وتصميمها لإقليم الفرات الأوسط، التي تضمنت مجموعة من الخرائط السنوية والشهرية وبالاعتماد على طريقة خطوط الحرارة المتساوية، والتدرج المساحي، والأشكال البيانية، حيث بينت الدراسة أن خطوط الحرارة المتساوية، تعد من أفضل الطرائق لتمثيل المعدلات السنوية لدرجة الحرارة بينما تعد طريقة التدرج المساحي ذات إدراك بصري عالي، قياسا بطريقة الخطوط المتساوية، حيث أكدت الدراسة أن استخدام نظم المعلومات الجغرافية، ذات أهمية كبيرة أصبح من خلالها إمكانية تصميم الخرائط بجودة عالية، وموضوعية تامة، تعتمد على طبيعة البيانات المراد تمثيلها.
