In his well-known work Ἑλλάδος περιήγησις (Description of Greece), Pausanias had collected various local mythological tales that are characterized by uniqueness and rarity. One of these distinctive tales is the journey of the Thessalian hero Eurypylus from Troy to Patrae carrying in a coffer an image of the god Dionysus (Paus. 7.19. 6-9). This tale is mentioned through the context of Pausanias’ description to the customs, traditions and beliefs of the people of Patrae. Finally, the researcher has sought for analyzing this tale depending on the nature of Pausanias’ work and according to what was mentioned through the literary and archaeological sources, appling the myth and ritual, or myth-ritualist, theory, as a method of interpretation |
