توالت كتب أهل الكوفة إلى الإمام الحسين عليه السلام، تدعوه إلى المجيء إليهم، وراحت رسلهم تغذ السير، إلى المدينة بين آنٍ وآخر، فرأى عليه السلام أن إجابتهم صارت واجبة عليه، وقام لهم العذر في ذلك، على الرغم من معرفته، بما سيؤول إليه الأمر، لأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أخبره بمصرعه ومصرع أهل بيته عليه السلام وأصحابه. ولما سمع المسلمون ذلك اعترض بعضهم على رحيله عليه السلام إلى العراق، خشية عليه، مثل اعتراض محمد بن الحنفية وعبد الله بن عباس، واعترض بعضهم الآخر ظاهرياً، وهو راغب في رحيله، مثل عبد الله بن الزبير، ولكنه عليه السلام لم يأبه بأي اعترض، لأنه بهذا السفر ماضٍ في أمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. ولكي ينهي الإمام عليه السلام ما يثار من كلام بشأن سفره، ويدعو في الوقت نفسه المسلمين إلى نصرته، إقامة للحجة عليهم، ولئلا يقول قائل إنه لا يعلم بذلك، قرر السفر يوم التروية الثامن من ذي الحجة على مشهد من المسلمين المجتمعين للحج، ثم خطب بالناس هذه الخطبة التي سنقرؤها قراءة تأويلية، فنعمد فيها إلى تدبر المعاني الكامنة خلف معانيها الظاهرية، لأن أحاديث أهل البيت عليهم السلام تحمل على وجوه كثيرة، ولا تحمل على وجه واحد من جهة، ولأنه عليه السلام أراد أن يوصل ما يريده إلى المسلمين بأيسر العبارات وأجزلها، فجاءت عبارته متضمنة ذلك بوصفه حقائق ثابتة، لا يقبل إل التسليم بها، وهو ما يريده عليه السلام، لأنه دعوة إلى النجاة من الهلكة. بقي أن نقول، إن هذه القراءة التأويلية، لا تجنح - إن شاء الله - إلى تحميل العبارات ما لا تحتمل فذلك ليس من قصدنا، وإنما تسعى إلى تلمس ما يمكن أن تقدمه اللغة التي يعرف أهل البيت عليهم السلام خفايا استعمالها ومواطن جمالها، ومواضع قدرتها على استيعاب المعاني التي يراد التعبير عنها.
