تناول موضوع الدراسة مشكلة الطلاق العاطفي، موضحة الأسس العلمية والنظريات النفسية المتعلقة بالموضوع، وبيان العلاج الإسلامي لتلك المشكلة، حيث إنه يؤدي إلى العديد من المخاطر التي تتعدد صورها، وأخطرها المشكلات النفسية التي تؤثر على طبيعة الحياة الزوجية، ويتعدى أثر تلك الحالة إلى تعرض الأبناء لمخاطر نفسية وسلوكية عديدة. تمر المملكة العربية السعودية في الوقت الحاضر بمرحلة متميزة من مراحل التغيير الاجتماعي الذي شمل كل قطاعاتها الاجتماعية، كما تشهد بعض التغييرات المتلاحقة والتطورات الكبيرة؛ وحيث إن العصر بتطوراته ومدنيته وحضارته يسبب العديد من السلبيات ليس على نطاق المملكة فحسب، بل على مستوى العالم أيضا. في ضوء الواقع الحالي في المملكة العربية السعودية وما تشهده من تحولات وتغييرات؛ فقد أكدت الدراسات على ضرورة تطوير مهنة الخدمة الاجتماعية بما يتلاءم مع ظروف المجتمع الحالية؛ وذلك من أجل تحقيق الدعم الاجتماعي الملائم للأسرة لزيادة دافعيتها، وتعزيز مقدرتها لحل المشكلات، منتهجة الحلول السليمة لما تعانيه الأسرة من مشكلات اجتماعية تحدث بين الزوجين؛ كالفتور العاطفي الذي يؤدي إلى العديد من المخاطر التي تتعدد صورها، وأخطرها المشكلات النفسية، وانعدام الأمان الأسري. ومن هنا تظهر أهمية العواطف بين الزوجين لتحقيق السعادة لكافة أفراد الأسرة، وتجنبهم العديد من المشكلات النفسية والاجتماعية والسلوكية، ابتداء من الزوجين ومرورا بالأبناء وانتهاء بكافة المتصلين بالزوجين المهتمين بانتظام الحياة الزوجية بينهما. في ضوء ما ذكر، فإن موضوع الدراسة يسعى إلى التعرف على ظاهرة الطلاق العاطفي بين الزوجين (الأنواع، الأسباب، الآثار)، وبيان إسهامات الخدمة الاجتماعية في الحد منه، من خلال تقديم تصور مهني مقترح لتدخل المهني مع الحالات التي تعاني من الطلاق العاطفي، منطلقا من فلسفة مهنة الخدمة الاجتماعية، في ضوء أهدافها ومبادئها المتسقة مع مبادئ الشريعة الإسلامية.
